Feature Friday – Davidson NC

Davidson is one of my favorite lake towns. Located close enough to Charlotte to go in anytime, but has the small town feeling away from city life. The downtown of Davidson is centered around Davidson College, which is also were it got it’s name.

What I love about Davidson:
The small town feel.
The historic downtown.
Pizza at Mandolinos.
Cocktails at Kindred.
Concerts on the green.
Saturday Farmer’s Market exploding with local produce!
French pastries at Gateau.
An actual Book Store!!
Local theatre with Davidson Community Players
Easy access to I77.

What don’t I like about Davidson:
Hmmmm. nothing really. Maybe the lack of a wine store, if I am really being pushed for an answer.

There is always something going on, either in the town or at Davidson College.

The town of Davidson was originally called Davidson College, as it was first and foremost a college town that later evolved into a rural farming town. Soon after the expansion of the railroad, Davidson became a shipping point for cash crops, particularly cotton, and competed with surrounding towns for business. Racial struggles involving segregation occurred in Davidson during the 1960s, with college students leading the way toward desegregation. In the 1970s, residents fought against proposed large developments which kept the town small. Shortly after, cotton mills began to close and the first strip mall appeared, and the town has grown ever since as a progressive community that embraces diversity.
